You should be healthy with breasts that are fully developed and be the appropriate age to get implants. The Food and Drug Administration approves the use of saline implants if you are at least 18 years of age. You will have a choice of saline or silicone implants once you are age 22 or older. Do I qualify for breast Augmentation?
You should qualify for breast augmentation if your breasts have been impacted by aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss. Breast augmentation with implants can give your breasts life with increased shape and fullness. It is also a welcomed option if you are an athlete with little breast tissue or body fat, or have an overall lack of native breast volume.
During your consultation with Dr. Chevray, the appropriate implant will be chosen based on your body frame, as well as the results you wish to achieve. Implants are made in varying sizes and profiles, as well as shapes and textures — each of which is considered carefully in order to attain the wanted appearance. Still, the most common implants are silicone or saline, both widely popular and safe. He can also go over the option of having a fat transfer to your breasts if you would like to go that route.
BREAST IMPLANT SizeS, Shapes, and Profiles
- Breast implant size
Implant size is distinguished based on the number of ccs of silicone or saline used. To choose the right amount, Dr. Chevray will evaluate how much native breast tissue exists and the size you hope to achieve. At Chevray Plastic Surgery, you can now try on breast implant sizers in our office to experience the feeling of different sizes. Our implant sizers are made of neoprene sacks filled with beads, which will conform to the shape of your natural breast as you try them on to decide the best size option for you. We can also use the sizers to help you envision your breasts with a fat transfer. - Breast implant shape
Synthetic breast implants are produced in either a teardrop or round shape. Both shapes are widely used; however, most of our patients go with a round implant. It generally appears more natural while adding a fullness to the upper breast that most patients desire. - Breast implant profile
The implant profile equates to how far out the augmented breasts look (projection). Meaning, this is what one sees from the side view. Projections range from low to extra high. - Fat transfer to your breasts
If you choose to have your own fat added to your breasts, then you will need to have liposuction in a donor area with a sufficient amount to fat to harvest. Dr. Chevray usually takes the donor fat from the abdomen, thighs, back, or a combination if needed.
Breast Implants: Saline or Silicone?
We understand all of the considerations may seem overwhelming, but choosing the appropriate implant is somewhat easy once the goals are discussed during the consultation. There are two main types of breast implants: silicone and saline.
- Silicone implants feel and look more realistic. However, a silicone breast implant will be more difficult to detect implant ruptures with no visual deflation of the breast.
- Saline implants will still provide a realistic look and feel (just not as well as silicone). However, if a saline implant ruptures, you will know immediately. The breast will look and feel deflated with a ruptured saline implant.
Dr. Chevray will also want to discuss with you about your preferences for incision type and implant placement when making plans for your surgery. Breast implants can be placed under or on top of the pectoral muscle. Where to place the implant depends on numerous factors, including the size and type of implant, plus the opinion of Dr. Chevray. Regardless of the incision, scarring is usually minimal. Implant placement is based upon your body type, implant size, and lifestyle.
Dr. Chevray's Surgical Technique
Before your surgery, you’ll undergo pre-operative lab work and be instructed to avoid foods and drinks on the day of your surgery. In an outpatient setting, you will be placed under general anesthesia for the duration of your procedure. You will be comfortably asleep throughout the surgery. Depending on the type of implant selected, Dr. Chevray will make a small incision beneath the breast, around the nipple, or under your arm. The implant will be positioned into place (above or under the pectoral muscle) and your incision sutured shut. Most breast augmentations take no more than two hours. Then, you will be taken into recovery and carefully monitored by our post-op nursing staff before being discharged. Finally, we will send you home wearing a wire-free, compression bra to assist with swelling.
During Your recovery
To get the most out of your breast augmentation, make sure to follow Dr. Chevray’s post-op instructions carefully and come in for your post-op follow-up appointments. You will need to fill a prescription pain medication to address discomfort, have a supportive post-surgical bra without underwire to wear, and have help at home while you are recovering. Take time off from work until Dr. Chevray clears you to return. While individual results vary, most patients can engage in everyday activities within several days; however, physical exertion, such as exercise, should be avoided for at least 6 – 8 weeks. Cosmetic breast surgery results in beautiful outcomes that feel and appear both normal and natural.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have my implants removed?
You might decide that you want to replace or remove your implants. If this happens, Dr. Chevray offers breast revision surgery. During the revision surgery, your current implants will be either replaced with new implants or the breast will be reshaped without augmentation. You may need to have excess skin removed since larger implants may stretch your skin. Dr. Chevray will guide you through the process regardless if you want to replace your implants or not.
Can I breastfeed with implants?
If you want to breastfeed after breast augmentation, be sure to tell Dr. Chevray during your consultation. It may be possible to breastfeed with implants with the right surgical technique and placement. Breastfeeding and pregnancy can alter your plastic surgery results so it is better to wait until your family is complete to have any type of cosmetic breast surgery.
Can Dr. Chevray make both of my breasts the same size?
Yes. He can perform breast augmentation to increase the size of one breast in order to correct an asymmetrical breast. Most likely, he will want to do surgery on both breasts (even if different size implants are needed) to create a natural, symmetrical appearance. Talk to Dr. Chevray during your consultation about what you are wanting to accomplish with your surgery. He will give you recommendations for what can be done for your situation.
