What is liposuction?
No matter how much you try to lose weight, you probably still have pockets of fat that prevent you from enjoying your slimmer (after weight loss) body. Chevray Plastic Surgery is proud to offer the latest liposuction techniques to safely eliminate small amounts of fat from the body. Lipo, or liposuction, is a body contouring procedure that reduces pockets of fat from the flanks, tummy, buttocks, thighs, and more to create a leaner appearance. This cosmetic procedure at Chevray Plastic Surgery can treat several body parts at a time. When we see you for your consultation, our Houston, TX board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Pierre Chevray, will assess you to see if you qualify. You can also discuss any aesthetic goals that will help you feel and look your absolute best. We like to have liposuction consultations with patients who are relatively healthy, nonsmokers, and who struggle with specific areas of stubborn fat. Liposuction patients should have relatively firm skin and muscle tone. Schedule a professional consultation to learn more about whether liposuction is right for you at our office in Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX.

Do I qualify for liposuction?
Fat removal surgery is a terrific procedure if you are at a healthy weight but still have troublesome areas of fat that have been hard to lose. Women and men interested in liposuction should have skin that is taut because liposuction is not a treatment for loose skin. It is also important to know that liposuction is not a treatment for losing weight. Women having liposuction should be past pregnancies as this could compromise the lasting outcome. At the time of your initial consultation, Dr. Chevray will set realistic expectations. Liposuction is a versatile surgical technique that can improve many different areas, including:
- Back and upper torso
The flaps of fat that bulge on the back and upper torso can be a trouble spot for men and women who have tried to lose weight, yet the fat there stays put. - Abdomen
It is very common to have abdominal fat that you would like to have removed. Candidates for liposuction need to have excellent skin elasticity to qualify for liposuction alone in the abdominal area. - Liposuction on the chest (also known as a breast reduction for men)
Excessive fatty tissue in the chest may cause men to develop what many of our patients refer to as "man boobs" during the consultation. Liposuction can effectively make that stubborn fat on your chest disappear, giving the chest a more sculpted, masculine appearance. If there is actual breast tissue present, then the patient would be treated for gynecomastia. - Calf and ankles
You may describe the area between your calves and ankles as "cankles." To give the legs more definition and separation between the calves and ankles, liposuction can remove the fat plumping the area. - Jawline
Liposuction around your jawline can give you a more defined and attractive chin and jawline. Say your goodbyes to that double-chin appearance. You face will look more defined and slimmer.
How does liposuction work?
Surgical liposuction is completed as an outpatient procedure with the patient under general anesthesia. A punch-hole incision is placed in the skin so a cannula can be inserted. A cannula is a special tool that helps loosen the fatty tissue that is being suctioned out. After the desired amount of fat deposits have been removed, Dr. Chevray will close the small incision. Depending on the number of sections treated, your surgery may last several hours. In the dedicated area for recovery, your post-op nurse will help manage any discomfort and look after your treated areas until you are discharged.
Life after liposuction
You may need to recover at home from liposuction for 1 – 3 weeks, depending on the number of sections treated and the amount of fat removed. It's normal to see swelling and bruising for 1 – 2 weeks, and you should have the stitches removed on day 7 – 10. The most important thing to do after having liposuction is to give your body time to rest and recover. When you decide to go back to your job after your procedure, you need to remember to go slow. To increase your strength, try walking and light workouts as approved by Dr. Chevray. Remember, you may see some improvements after six weeks, but it takes 6 – 10 months before your new body contour and shape is attained.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can liposuction be performed safely?
Some of the areas Dr. Chevray will perform liposuction:
- Abdomen/hips/waist
- Ankles/calves/inner knees/thighs
- Back/bra line
- Buttocks
- Chest
- Neck
- Upper arms
You may have one area treated or a combination of areas performed on your day of surgery. This will be up to Dr. Chevray during the planning stages of your treatment.
Will I have scars?
Since liposuction is an invasive surgery, incisions will be made and sutured. This will leave scars; however, Dr. Chevray does his best to reduce their appearance. This starts with making thin incisions in the natural folds of your body or in less visible areas. After your surgery, Dr. Chevray or a member of his team will teach you how to care for your incisions to heal properly and eventually fade with time.
Will my liposuction result last?
Before liposuction, it is important to be committed to maintaining your results. Although liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in your body, you can still lose and gain weight. Dr. Chevray suggests that you be at or near your ideal weight prior to liposuction. Afterward, it's best to stay within 5 – 10 pounds of your post-surgical weight. Getting pregnant after liposuction will also impact your results; however, a second surgery, like a mommy makeover, may be done to refresh your appearance.
